Bituminous membranes (also known as sheet membranes) are among the most reliable, heavy-duty solutions for waterproofing flat roofs, podiums, and basements. They provide a uniform thickness that liquid coatings can't always guarantee, acting as a rugged shield against water

1. APP-Modified Membranes (Atactic Polypropylene)

This is the most common choice for hotter climates. The bitumen is modified with plastic, which raises its melting point and makes it highly resistant to UV radiation and thermal aging.

• Best For: Exposed flat roofs and terraces in tropical or sunny regions.

• Application: Usually "torch-on," where the underside is melted with a blowtorch to fuse it to the concrete.

2. SBS-Modified Membranes (Styrene Butadiene Styrene)

The bitumen is modified with synthetic rubber, giving the sheet superior elasticity. It can stretch and return to its original shape without cracking.

• Best For: Colder climates or structures that experience movement, such as metal decks or high-vibration areas.

• Application: Often torch-applied, though many newer versions are self-adhesive.

3. Self-Adhesive Membranes (Peel-and-Stick)

These membranes eliminate the need for a blowtorch, making them safer and faster for residential projects. They are coated with a high-tack adhesive protected by a release film.

• Best For: DIY projects, wooden roofs, or areas where open flames are prohibited.

• Finish: Often comes with a mineral or aluminum foil top layer for UV protection.

• Surface Preparation: The concrete must be dry and clean. A bituminous primer is essential to ensure the membrane bonds permanently and doesn't lift over time.

• The Overlap: Most leaks happen at the seams. Ensure every sheet overlaps the previous one by at least 100mm (4 inches).

• Protection Layer: Since bitumen is black and absorbs heat, it is often topped with a reflective silver paint or a protective cement screed to keep the building cool and extend the membrane's life.
